Today, the Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada appointed Renu Mandhane a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario (Brampton) effective immediately. The Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) congratulates the Honourable Madam Justice Mandhane on her appointment.
Madam Justice Mandhane was appointed Chief Commissioner of the OHRC in October 2015. Under her leadership, the OHRC has played a pivotal role in addressing systemic discrimination against the most marginalized and vulnerable people in Ontario. She has been a strong proponent of demographic data collection, especially in relation to policing, corrections and child welfare.
Madam Justice Mandhane built public confidence in Ontario’s human rights system by enhancing the OHRC’s governance and accountability, by forging sustainable relationships with diverse stakeholders, and by meaningfully committing to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. She was a particularly strong advocate for and defender of the OHRC’s independence.
The OHRC will continue work on its strategic initiatives while the government undertakes the process to appoint a new Chief Commissioner.
The OHRC thanks Madam Justice Mandhane for her leadership, and wishes her success in her new role.
