    Academic courses: the most academically challenging course options in Grades 9 and 10. They are required for university preparation courses taken in Grades 11 and 12, which are needed if a student intends to apply to university.

    Alphabetic knowledge: knowledge of letter names, shapes and letter-sound associations. The alphabetic principle refers to the idea there is a systematic relationship between letters (or groups of letters) and the spoken sounds of words.

    First Nations, Métis and Inuit experiences

    Recognize distinctions

    1. The Ministry of Education (Ministry), school boards and others should use “First Nations, Métis and Inuit” when possible and appropriate. Recognizing and distinguishing between First Nations, Métis and Inuit makes sure that all First Nations, Métis and Inuit children and youth see themselves in the school system, feel represented, and have trust that their unique needs are understood and being met.

    Toronto – A new policy on preventing sexual and gender-based harassment was launched today by the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) in partnership with the Ryerson Students’ Union, Ryerson University and the CAW-Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy, Ryerson University.

  4. Housing discrimination and the individual

    From: Right at home: Report on the consultation on human rights and rental housing in Ontario

    This section discusses the most significant rental housing issues affecting individual tenants and housing providers. Many of the experiences of discrimination and harassment, tenant screening and accommodation are intrinsically linked to the systemic elements discussed in section 5. For example, the individual barriers to housing experienced by tenants in receipt of social assistance are, in many cases, linked to the broader societal issues of inadequate income levels and poverty.

  5. To dream together: Indigenous peoples and human rights dialogue report

    This report summarizes key points of the discussion and recommendations arising from the three-day Indigenous Peoples and Human Rights Dialogue. It features the collective wisdom of Indigenous Elders, knowledge keepers, academics, political and government leaders, advocates, lawyers, policy makers and activists. Representatives of the OHRC, Human Rights Legal Support Centre, Social Justice Tribunals of Ontario, and the Canadian Human Rights Commission also took part.

  6. Communities for Change: Community Engagement Strategy & 2017 Inaugural Community Advisory Group Summit Report

    In 2015-2016, the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) undertook a strategic planning process that involved extensive conversations with nearly 300 people representing over 80 organizations across Ontario. By far, the strongest theme that emerged was the need to implement a strategic, meaningful, consistent, accessible and sustainable approach to stakeholder engagement.
