  1. Policy on requiring a driver's licence as a condition of employment

    September 2000 - A driver's licence contains personal information about an individual which could lead to the classification of a job applicant according to a prohibited ground of discrimination, contrary to subsection 23(2) of the Code. Therefore, unless a driver's licence is required to enable a person to perform the essential duties of a job, it should not be requested in an application form or during an employment interview.
  2. Policy on creed and the accommodation of religious observances

    October 1996 - Creed is a prohibited ground of discrimination under the Code. Every person has the right to equal treatment with respect to services, goods, facilities, employment, the occupancy of accommodation, the right to enter into contracts and the right to join trade unions or other vocational associations, without discrimination because of creed. These policy guidelines set out the position of the OHRC with respect to creed and the accommodation of religious observances related to a person's creed.

    Octobre 1996 - La croyance est un motif illicite de discrimination énoncé dans le Code. Toute personne a droit à un traitement égal en matière de services, de biens ou d'installations, d'emploi, d'occupation de logement, de conclusion de contrats ou d'adhésion à un syndicat ou une association commerciale ou professionnelle, sans discrimination fondée sur la croyance. Cet énoncé de politique définit la position de la CODP en ce qui a trait à la croyance et aux mesures d'adaptation relatives aux observances religieuses liées à la croyance d'une personne.

    Toronto - Commenting on the horrible tragedy of September 11th, the Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, Mr Keith Norton, issued a call to civic, religious and community leaders "to jointly take leadership in the fight against hatred and to be vigilant against any backlash which might be directed against innocent persons or communities. It is surely time for a show of solidarity, especially among our major religious groups, to affirm that acts of violence motivated by hate are not justified by the teachings of any faith."

    Toronto - Commentant les tragiques événements du 11 septembre dernier, M. Keith Norton, Commissaire en chef de la Commission ontarienne de droits de la personne a lancé un appel auprès des responsables d'organismes civiques, communautaires et religieux « pour qu'ils mènent ensemble la lutte contre la haine et se gardent contre toute réaction à l`encontre de communautés ou de personnes innocentes. Il s'agit ici d`une occasion de démontrer par notre solidarité, surtout de la part de grands groupes religieux, qu`aucun acte de violence haineuse ne peux se justifier à partir de croyances religieuses. »

  6. Insurance industry urged to avoid using enumerated grounds of discrimination and genetic testing information for measuring risk

    Toronto - The Ontario Human Rights Commission today released a report on consultations it conducted on human rights issues in insurance. In accordance with the Commission's mandate, the objective of the consultation was to promote awareness, understanding and advancement of human rights in the area of insurance and to examine alternatives to current practices by obtaining input from experts and regulators in the insurance industry as well as from consumers. Access to insurance in our society raises significant issues about distributive justice and fairness in the public sphere, issues that have received scant attention in Canada and in Ontario.

  7. Commission calls for increased vigilance

    Toronto - Chief Commissioner Keith Norton today reiterated a call for increased vigilance and the need to strike a balance between protecting human rights and maintaining public security. Reflecting on the first anniversary of the tragic events of last September 11th, Mr. Norton stated, "Although we would like to believe that tolerance has become part of our core values, regrettably, incidents of hate and discrimination towards certain community members of our society in the aftermath of last year’s events underline an ongoing need for vigilance."

  8. La Commission fait appel à une plus grande vigilance

    Toronto - Le commissaire en chef, M. Keith Norton, a réitéré aujourd’hui son appel à une plus grande vigilance et a souligné qu’il faut atteindre un équilibre entre la protection des droits de la personne et le maintien de la sécurité publique. À l’occasion du premier anniversaire des événements tragiques du 11 septembre dernier, M. Norton a déclaré ce qui suit : « Bien que nous aimerions croire que la tolérance fait partie de nos valeurs fondamentales, c’est avec regret que nous devons constater que des incidents de haine et de discrimination à l’endroit de membres de certaines communautés de notre société, après les événements de l’année dernière, montrent qu’il faut continuer à faire preuve de vigilance ».
